1. First meeting and analysis session
An Interzero consultant meets with the company to understand its specific context, including the types of packaging used, the activities carried out throughout the supply chain, and the characteristics of the relevant industry.
2. Mapping of company flows and processes
Using a structured checklist, Interzero analyses the company’s packaging flows and internal processes relevant to the PPWR, from the design and production stages through to waste management and reporting.
3. Tailored report with actionable recommendations
The company receives a report outlining the operational implications, the obligations applicable to its specific circumstances, and practical guidance on how to meet the requirements by 12 August 2026.
What is the PPWR and why does it affect your company?
The PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, EU Regulation 2025/40) is the new European legislation that redefines the obligations concerning packaging and packaging waste management. Unlike previous directives, it is directly binding in all EU Member States. It does not require transposition into national law and does not provide for extensions.
For companies that manufacture, use, or market packaging in the EU, this means there is one fixed, non-negotiable date: 12 August 2026. From that date onwards, the new requirements will apply to all companies, regardless of their industry or size.
Why it pays to act before the deadline
Delaying compliance with the PPWR exposes companies to tangible risks, including financial penalties, restrictions on placing products on the market and, in the most critical cases, operational disruptions throughout the supply chain. Reviewing packaging, processes, and reporting takes time. Understanding your company’s current level of readiness means being able to plan the necessary actions without being caught unprepared by the deadline.
The main PPWR requirements
Recyclability
Packaging will need to be designed to be effectively recyclable in accordance with criteria established at European level.
Reusability
Minimum reuse targets will apply to certain packaging categories.
Minimum recycled content
Mandatory targets will apply to the amount of recycled plastic used in packaging, with thresholds increasing over time.
Packaging reduction
Companies will be required to eliminate unnecessary packaging and optimise packaging volumes.
Harmonised labelling
New rules will ensure that information about packaging composition and end-of-life disposal is communicated clearly and consistently.
Specific restrictions
Restrictions will apply to certain materials and packaging formats, including the use of PFAS in certain types of food-contact packaging.
