Proven waste management solutions in the tobacco industry
For the tobacco industry’s largest and most complex waste streams, we have developed proven, cost-effective treatment and recovery methods . These solutions are based on the data and experience our experts have gained from previous implementations and utilize advanced recycling and recovery technologies.
Each solution is based on a proven service model and can be introduced to another manufacturer without having to design the entire process from scratch. This allows companies to quickly implement efficient processes and achieve predictable environmental and economic benefits.
A field-proven model means faster implementation times, lower risk of operational disruptions, and predictable results supported by experience gained from previous projects. For international manufacturers, an additional advantage is the ability to replicate the same approach in other countries, adapting it to local regulatory requirements and market conditions.
Our services can be implemented individually or as part of a broader package of environmental services for a single plant, a retail network, or the entire company. Tobacco manufacturers can also gradually expand their collaboration with Interzero, starting with a single process or waste stream and building a solution tailored to their needs over time.
E-cigarette recycling: 95% material recovery thanks to Interzero innovation
Waste from new tobacco products is a relatively new and particularly complex waste stream. Collecting small quantities of used devices from locally distributed collection points is costly, while recycling mixed-material waste containing plastics, metals, electronic components, and integrated batteries requires highly specialized facilities.
Despite these challenges, we have identified the high value of these materials and developed a proprietary multi-level process for treatment, separation, and recycling that achieves a 95% recovery rate for used e-cigarettes and cartridges. The recovered materials can be reintroduced into the production cycle and used in other industrial sectors. We offer this proprietary process for used e-cigarettes and cartridges to manufacturers and companies in the sector as a tested and validated service. The model requires only limited adaptations and guarantees high recycling efficiency and replicable results, relieving customers of the burden of managing post-consumer WEEE.
Within the scope of this service, the customer’s role is limited to requesting waste collection and delivering it to our staff. Interzero manages or coordinates all subsequent phases, from transportation to recycling to detailed documentation of the recovery activities . Upon request, we can also provide small WEEE containers suitable for retail outlets and organize the entire collection system for used e-cigarettes and cartridges within the sales network.

E-cigarettes used as a source of secondary raw materials: an Interzero success story
The initial challenge
A tobacco manufacturer collected used e-cigarettes and cartridges at all its stores. The goal was to ensure effective WEEE recycling, maximizing material recovery and obtaining complete process documentation, including detailed certificates detailing the percentage of recovered materials.
Our solution
We implemented a reverse micrologistics system within the client's retail network. E-cigarettes and cartridges were collected on demand using small vehicles, thus reducing logistics costs. The devices were then sent to a specialized facility for shredding and separation of the various material fractions.
The result
Thanks to advanced sorting and treatment technologies, the client achieved a 95% recycling rate, certified by the recovery plant. The implementation of the Interzero Waste Platform also ensured full visibility of the entire process, simplifying document management and reporting.

A single partner for the management of all tobacco production waste
We provide comprehensive waste management services for manufacturing facilities , based on a model already proven in the tobacco industry. We directly manage waste from cigarette production, including tobacco dust and residues, filters, packaging, and defective batches of new products, directing it to compliant and sustainable treatment.
We organize and coordinate all waste logistics, freeing internal staff from complex and time-consuming operational tasks. Each client has a dedicated Interzero representative who coordinates relationships with the facilities, schedules collections, supervises the destruction of products under customs control, and provides daily operational support.
For each fraction, we identify the most appropriate treatment solution , following the European waste hierarchy and prioritizing processes that enable material recovery. For example, waste containing tobacco can be sent for composting or anaerobic digestion in biogas plants. Energy recovery is used only when priority material recovery solutions are not possible.
Efficient and optimized waste management: an Interzero success story
The initial challenge
A tobacco manufacturer was looking for a partner capable of comprehensively managing the collection and treatment of waste generated by cigarette production. The assignment involved over 30 different types of waste.
Our solution
We offered an integrated service with specific treatment pathways for each stream. Tobacco residues and dust were sent to biogas or composting plants, while unmarketable packaged batches were sent to waste-to-energy plants capable of producing energy and raw materials for the cement industry.
The result
We were awarded the management contract for over 30 types of waste. The client was able to entrust all key collection and treatment activities to a single partner, reducing the number of processes to manage internally and freeing up company resources.
Fiscal destruction of unmarketable tobacco products and e-cigarettes

Tobacco manufacturers sometimes have to handle products that are unfit for sale, for example due to manufacturing defects, damaged packaging, market returns, or regulatory changes. In these cases, it is essential to ensure safe, traceable, and documented destruction.
Interzero organizes and coordinates the entire process of collection, transportation, and processing of products to be disposed of , ensuring full traceability of flows and correct management of the required documentation.
Thanks to our collaboration with authorized facilities, the products can be sent for energy recovery processes or other treatment solutions compliant with current legislation, in compliance with environmental and safety standards.
Environmental consulting and regulatory compliance for the tobacco industry
Tobacco companies operate in an ever-evolving regulatory environment. In addition to waste management, they must address obligations related to extended producer responsibility (EPR), environmental reporting, and the growing focus on circular economy principles.
Interzero supports companies in analyzing applicable obligations and identifying the most effective solutions to ensure regulatory compliance and operational efficiency.
Our experts assist companies in managing compliance requirements relating to:
- packaging;
- electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE);
- batteries and accumulators;
- obligations arising from the SUP legislation;
- national and international EPR systems;
- collection and analysis of environmental data.
