How the CONAI refund works and who can request it
Companies that purchase packaging materials are required to pay the CONAI Environmental Contribution (CAC), which is used to fund activities for the collection, recovery, and recycling of packaging waste. Companies can obtain the CONAI refund for packaged goods sold abroad, allowing them to recover part of the costs incurred throughout the year. The refund procedure requires gathering detailed documentation and submitting a formal request to CONAI by February 28 of the year following the relevant fiscal year.
CONAI (National Packaging Consortium) is a private, non-profit consortium responsible for ensuring the recovery and recycling of packaging materials. Established in 1997, CONAI coordinates the activities of seven material-specific consortia (steel, aluminium, paper, wood, plastic, bioplastics, and glass) with the aim of reducing the environmental impact of packaging and promoting a circular economy.
