Solid experience in the management of WEEE and other waste generated by the production of electronics and household appliances

Our in-depth knowledge of the sector and the main critical issues related to its waste has allowed us to develop specific processes capable of optimizing individual activities or the entire waste management process. Solutions tested under real-world operating conditions free companies from tasks that require specific expertise, appropriate technologies, or significant internal resource deployment.
Our portfolio for electronics and household appliance manufacturers includes, among other things, factory waste management, including dedicated waste management staff, collection organization, and treatment of all waste fractions, as well as services for defective or recalled equipment. In the latter case, the process includes product recall, selection of the most suitable facility, supervised destruction, secure data erasure from digital media, and documentation certifying proper treatment.

Waste management in production plants

For electronics and household appliance manufacturers, we’ve developed a ready-to-use model that allows Interzero to take over the entire waste management process at one or more customer facilities. The model integrates two key elements into a single, efficient process:

  • Logistics: We organize the collection of all waste managed and generated at the customer’s premises, including packaging waste, defective products, production waste, and process waste;
  • Treatment: We deliver waste to specialized, authorized facilities listed in our supplier register, which treat it in compliance with applicable Italian legislation and the waste hierarchy.

Our extensive network of treatment plants across the country allows us to ensure continuity for even the largest flows, integrate new fractions, and manage occasional interventions for non-standard waste or products. Producers thus benefit from a single management model, coordinated by a single operator, with less strain on internal resources and a reduced risk of plant disruptions.

FAQ

Defective components and products no longer fit for sale are sent to facilities specializing in the disassembly, preparation for reuse, and recycling of WEEE , where they are treated in accordance with the regulatory waste hierarchy. Equipment and components are first assessed to determine whether they can be fully or partially reused. Suitable items are prepared for reuse, for example through repair. The remaining equipment is disassembled and separated for recycling, primarily into raw materials, or sent for other forms of recovery when recycling is not possible.

Manufacturers must comply with EPR obligations for three streams: electrical and electronic equipment, batteries and rechargeable batteries, and packaging. In Italy, this means, in particular: registration in the National Register of WEEE Producers and participation in a collective or individual system pursuant to Legislative Decree 49/2014 for WEEE; compliance with Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 for batteries and rechargeable batteries; and membership in CONAI or an autonomous system for packaging, with the new requirements introduced by the PPWR. The exact scope depends, among other factors, on the manufacturer’s location, distribution model, and the markets in which the products are made available.

The first step is to identify the types of batteries placed on the market by the manufacturer, assign them to the correct categories, and determine the obligations required for each category under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. The Regulation gradually introduces new requirements, including labeling, removability and replaceability, recycled content, supply chain due diligence, EPR, and, for some categories, a digital battery passport.
For electronics and household appliance manufacturers, this means auditing existing products and processes, defining their roles and obligations, and preparing their organizations for upcoming deadlines. Interzero supports companies in analyzing requirements and regulatory compliance, managing EPR obligations, and collecting and treating used batteries. If you market batteries subject to the Regulation, contact our consultants for a tailored proposal.

We help organize reporting on waste, packaging, electrical and electronic equipment, and other environmental obligations. Data centralization and digital tools reduce the time required to prepare declarations, including the annual MUD.

Market fluctuations cannot be completely eliminated, but a transparent collaboration model and appropriate regulatory mechanisms can reduce the risk of unexpected increases in recycling and environmental compliance costs.

Well-designed waste management processes generate measurable results and data that can be used in ESG communications. Higher recycling and recovery rates, lower quantities sent to landfill, and effective recovery of materials from defective equipment can strengthen a brand’s environmental credibility. It’s essential to base communications on data and documentation that demonstrate the actual treatment performed. For this reason, we provide comprehensive and detailed confirmations of recycling and treatment activities, useful for ESG reporting and for CSR and PR communications aimed at customers, investors, and business partners.

Interzero supports clients with waste traceability requirements: maintaining loading and unloading records, completing the Waste Identification Form (FIR), and preparing the MUD (Mud Inspection Report). Legal responsibility remains with the company, while Interzero significantly reduces the risk of errors, non-compliance, and fines.

The formal responsibility required by law remains with the company, but a single supplier can assume most of the operational activities related to waste management, reporting, product compliance, audit support, and environmental consulting. The client thus benefits from a single point of contact and coordinated environmental processes.
